Travelling in Curves draws together the pleasures of musical invention with the nuances of emotive expression. Simple, logical motifs progress through surprising turns of time, form, and harmony. Guarded whispers of anticipation open to pools of certainty, clouds of doubt, and sweeps
of exhilaration. This interweave of
structure and sentiment is echoed in the play between the music’s voice and
language. While the instrumentation
of guitar, saxophone, piano, bass,
and drums is very familiar, particularly to jazz listeners, this quintet speaks
with distinct inflections originating outside of the standard jazz lexicon.
This is due in part to the players’ extensive experience with genres
beyond jazz, including world beat, roots and classical.
It is also a result of the fresh compositional approach evident
throughout these blues, ballad and latin-inflected pieces.
